It’s one of the age old questions. While I don’t know if it’s the chicken or the egg, I can answer the next part of the question for you. Does the home buying process start with finding a REALTOR® or a Mortgage Lender? The answer is: You’re good either way.
REALTOR® first is a great option because whoever you choose to work with can give you great recommendations for a local lender who will take care of you and work well with your agent to ensure your buying process is seamless and successful. While getting pre-approved for a loan, your agent can get to know you and your preferences and start sending you listings so you can learn what areas offer what lifestyles.
Mortgage Lender first is also a good option. Since you need to be pre-approved before seeing homes, this way gives you the information your REALTOR® will need before you even talk to them. They will be able to help you figure out your spending comfort level so you can focus on homes in the correct price range right away. Just remember, usually a local, trusted lender is preferred. Extra tip for veterans: Just because the lending institution has “Veteran” in their name, doesn’t mean that they are the best choice. Check the fees you’ll be charged and compare those along with interest rates.
Basically, you’re good to go no matter which person you start with. Just like the chicken or the egg situation, each answer is correct. Do what makes you comfortable.
